**Pat Gibbs experience with a Blue
Jay feeding on flesh brought back some interesting comments.
John Inman comments that Blue Jays will come to the meat that he puts out
in winter for a Red-tailed Hawk. He has noted they very specifically go for the
meat, not the fat.
Bob Blake comments he has experienced a Blue Jay
take an American Goldfinch and was trying to kill it before he stopped
it.
Bob also comments they have had a nice Red Fox
in their Second North River yard the last 3 days. Bob can get within 10 feet of
it before it moves away as it is not at all shy. It walked in their garage on
Friday. It will lay down under the bird feeders and stay there until he goes
out and he almost walks up to it before it saunters away. Their dog Sacha is not
impressed!
**Louise Nichols reports that she is seeing about a
dozen or more Monarch Butterfly caterpillars on their small patch of
Common Milkweed, many of which appear to be in the final instar and should be
close to forming a chrysalis, but she has not seen one so far. They seem to be
very busy feeding and have been for a long while. The milkweed plant most
of them are on is almost stripped of leaves. She includes two
photos, one from a few days ago and one from Sunday morning. In the more
recent photo, a metal frame can be seen around the milkweed plant which Louise
placed there, hoping some of the caterpillars might use it to hang from when
they are ready to form a chrysalis.
**Jamie
Burris updates that the third Monarch Butterfly emerged Sunday morning at
0730 and Karen captured a cool shot of it hanging onto one of its short siblings
maybe! From the look of the pupa, he is sure it will hatch on Monday. Jamie is
concerned about the forecast for Monday and how it will affect its
hatching.
