** The Caissie family in Notre-Dame have had their first PURPLE FINCH
[Roselin pourpré] of the season. This species seems to be arriving back in the
area. They also had their first EVENING GROSBEAK [Gros-bec errant], and 2
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES [Sittelle à poitrine blanche] seem to be spending the
winter with the Caissies.
** Another report of PURPLE FINCHES [Roselin pourpré] appearing at
feeders; Carol Christopher had a bright male appear in her Miramichi yard on
Wednesday. It was also Carol’s first day for EVENING GROSBEAKS [Gros-bec
errant].
** It looks like Nature Moncton's WORKSHOP ON TRACKS, TRAILS AND SCAT, is
really going to happen on Sunday, as it seems to be the only day with clear
weather at that period. It will take place at the Tankville School, 1665 Elmwood
Drive, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. this coming Sunday afternoon, February 1. The
inexpensive guide-book, “Animal Tracks of Atlantic Canada” by Lone Pine Press is
suggested, if possible, for participants to have. A write-up about it is
attached.

WHO’S BEEN THERE AND WHO DONE
IT!
The
tracks, trails, and scats left behind in winter snow can tell us lots about
who’s been there and maybe what they’ve been up to. Looking for animal tracks,
trails, and scats can add a whole new dimension to a winter cross country ski or
snowshoe sortie. Also, just who may have visited your yard last night! Let’s
spend an indoor session with Nelson Poirier looking at tracks, the paws that
made them, and put the two together to know how the behaviour of the animal may
decide the particular trail left. And yes, those telltale scats
too!
To preregister, phone Judi Berry-Steeves at 387-4778 or
email Judi at jbsteeve@nbnet.nb.ca. $8 at the door to cover
costs.
All are welcome.
