**Carol Christopher
leaves some observations from her Miramichi bird feeder yard. It’s that time of
year when young of the year BLUE JAYS [Geai bleu] appear with bald heads, not
having completed their moult from their natal plumage as yet. She comments her
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD [Colibri à gorge rubis] patrons have swollen in
number, noting triple the visitors coming to feeders from what were there two
weeks ago. The population of young are out; however, the adult males will be
filing flight plans south by mid-August. She’s seen young of the year CEDAR
WAXWINGS [Jaseur d'Amérique] in her yard. She comments that there seems to be
less MOURNING DOVES [Tourterelle triste] and AMERICAN ROBINS [Merle d'Amérique]
around her yard this year, for some reason.
**Brian Stone has had
some unfortunate mobility problems at the moment, but can’t keep the camera
down. He got a photo of a content Robin with a beak full of fresh berries, as
well as a CABBAGE WHITE BUTTERFLY [Piéride du chou], while he was convalescing
on his deck.
**Aldo Dorio got a
photo of a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER [Pluvier argenté] on Friday at Hay Island. It’s
an adult starting to lose its breeding plumage en route to basic plumage. Aldo
also got a photo of a SORA [Marouette de Caroline] close up, and a NORTHERN
PARULA WARBLER [Paruline à collier] fledgling, still very much showing some
natal down feathers.
