**It’s been a few days of very content Cicadas [Cigale] with their
much-loved heat. John Massey got a photo of a DOG-DAY CICADA [Cigale
caniculaire] on Friday that had not reached its treetop song post or was on the
way back down to oviposit in the ground.
**Brian Stone has been working hard to develop a technique to
photograph the planet Saturn to show its rings. He was able to do that at 8:09
p.m. on Friday night, when he also photographed the expanding crescent
Moon.
**To share more from the pelagic trip to Grand Manan recently, and
show how incredible the newer point-and-shoot zoom cameras really are: in a
photo of Gannet Rock and its lighthouse, note a small speck on the pipes around
the lighthouse. A zoomed-in photo at the same distance shows it to be a
PEREGRINE FALCON [Faucon pèlerin] perched.
**Brian Stone’s yard resident BLACK AND YELLOW ARGIOPE SPIDER
[Argiope aurantia] is getting well monitored. It now has an obvious egg sac that
Brian photographed. The stabilimentum part of the web also shows nicely now,
with the surrounding circular webbing network showing. I suspect this will make
for a great photo op on a morning with dew. Brian also got a photo of a group of
APHIDS [Aphide] appearing to be feeding on the juices of a yard plant, and also
an ASSASSIN BUG nymph [Réduvidé prédateur] in its very blending
camouflage. Brian also photographed the Dragonflies [Libellule] SAFFRON
MEADOWHAWK [Sympétrum rubigineux] and VARIABLE DARNER [Aeschne domino] on
Wednesday.
Brian and I puzzled over a Warbler [Paruline] on Wednesday in
Albert County that Gilles Belliveau helped narrow down to an immature male
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT [Paruline masquée]. Another rear view of a Warbler is
suspected to be a BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER [Paruline à gorge
noire].
