** John Filliter got a photo of three OSPREY [Balbuzard pêcheur] on the
nest at the junction of Route 515 and the Haute-Aboujagane Road. John felt that
the middle bird was an adult, with the young of the year on either side. It will
not be long before these youngsters have to file flight plans south.
** Another nice find for Leon Gagnon at his Wilson Point summer home on
Miscou Island. On Sunday, a SAY'S PHOEBE [Moucherolle à ventre roux] came by. He
was able to capture a photo.
He again saw the subadult SNOWY OWL [Harfang des neiges] on Sunday morning
and an adult was seen as well, but a distance from it.
** I noted that there have been quite a number of SPRING PEEPERS [Rainette
crucifère] making their single calls from trees the past few nights. They sound
like a bird when they call singly. It surely is a different night sound compared
to the chorus of many Peepers at once in the spring.
** Many thanks to the folks who offered opinions on Aldo Dorio’s warbler
sent out yesterday. Opinions varied between fall BAY-BREASTED WARBLER [Paruline
à poitrine baie], fall BLACKPOLL WARBLER [Paruline rayée], and PINE WARBLER
[Paruline des pins] The legs were not visible in the photo which would have been
helpful. It does point out the challenge of identifying some of the fall
warblers from photos. Possibly, labelling will have to remain as just
“WARBLER-FALL ISSUE”, as is attached today. It is interesting to note that
National Geographic has these similar fall warblers on the same page.
Aldo also got a photo of a SAVANNAH SPARROW [Bruant des prés] up close on
Sunday, and also a BRONZE COPPER [Bronzé] butterfly, which would seem to be
getting late for this species.
