** Anne Marsch, Annette Stone and Brian Stone visited the Bouctouche area
on Saturday. There was a variety of ducks in the lagoons there, including
RING-NECKED DUCKS [Fuligule à collier], NORTHERN SHOVELER [Canard souchet],
GREEN-WINGED TEAL [Sarcelle d’hiver], NORTHERN PINTAILS [Canard pilet] and
scaup; from the head shape, the scaup photos appear to be LESSER SCAUP [Petit
Fuligule]. Also present were several BONAPARTE'S GULLS [Mouette de Bonaparte].
Four WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS [Bécasseau à croupion blanc] were spotted and
nicely photographed on the shore north of the lagoon, and YELLOWLEGS [chevaliers
sp.] were present at most places they stopped. As an additional comment, the
White-rumped Sandpiper is one of our late-lingering shorebirds. The annotated
list says they are expected into mid-November, and sometimes as late as early
December. [Note: “Birds of New Brunswick: An Annotated List”, published by the
New Brunswick Museum, 2004.]
** There have been two PINK-FOOTED GEESE [Oie à bec court] and a CACKLING
GOOSE [Bernache de Hutchins] spotted with CANADA GOOSE [Bernache du Canada]
flocks in Nova Scotia, in Truro and the Musquodoboit Valley, not that far away.
Be sure to check goose flocks very closely at the moment; it’s that time of
year.
