**  Nature Moncton’s BIRD-FEEDING WORKSHOP is on this Sunday afternoon, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Tankville School, 1665 Elmwood Drive.

**  An interesting butterfly caterpillar photo, taken recently by a resident of Shediac Bridge, was received via Ron Steeves. It’s a CANADIAN TIGER SWALLOWTAIL [Papillon tigré du Canada] caterpillar but it is very dark in colour compared to the bright green that it is during its growing larval stage. It turns dark, as in the photo, just before it goes into the chrysalis stage for the winter. The large eye spots on the head may have some light-sensitive properties but are indeed fake eyes that provide some protection from potential predators. From the photo, this form of protection must be effective.

**  Heather Silliker reports that they were pleased to have a colourful male HOUSE FINCH [Roselin familier] in their Upper Coverdale feeder yard on Saturday. This species is not very often seen out of urban areas, where it is a year-round resident.

**  David Miller noted a few AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS [Bruant hudsonien] in Salisbury a few days ago, and on Saturday was able to capture a nice photo of one in another part of Salisbury. It’s always pleasant to see this northern visitor arriving.

**  There are still some lingering BELTED KINGFISHERS [Martin-pêcheur d'Amérique] in the area. Louise and Maurice Richard spotted one around the river near their Acadieville cabin on Saturday.

Louise also found a very fresh-looking growth of OYSTER MUSHROOM [Pleurote en forme d'huitre] there. The recent warm weather would be good timing for this mushroom as it could fruit without getting frozen.

**  Aldo Dorio photographed some of the late-lingering shorebirds on Friday, getting a photo of a DUNLIN [Bécasseau variable] and two views of a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER [Pluvier argenté] that sometimes can be a challenge to be certain that in a photo it’s not an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER [Pluvier bronzé], but we are going with Black-bellied on this one.
