** Fred and Lynn Dube, along with others, located the CRESTED CARACARA again on Wednesday. When they arrived at 9:00 am it was nestled in tall grass out of sight but soon lifted to land on a fence post to give a great but distant view. It later lifted again flying towards the Harvey dam and they could not relocate it. A value added bonus was a PEREGRINE FALCON [Faucon pèlerin] perched on a dead tree along the dikes to give great observations only twenty five feet away, quite unconcerned with its admirers.

** Walt Forsey made an excellent video of PAINTED LADY [belle dame] butterflies in his Riverview yard, nectaring on the late blooming Sedum plant. Enjoy the action at the attached link. An interesting ladybug is joining them in one frame. Check it out at https://youtu.be/ySCfGZqu5Kw
What a season it has been for Painted Lady butterflies!

** John Massey was visited by one of our large ICHNEUMON WASPS in his Dieppe yard on Wednesday to pose for a photo of a strikingly marked example of this species. We have several species of this large, harmless to people wasp in New Brunswick but many are not as colorful as John's visitor.

*Ray Gauvin videotaped the domestic BLACK-NECKED SWANS and their cygnets at the roadside pond on Route 114 in Lower Coverdale. The cygnets are growing fast and one can be seen riding on its parent's back. (link coming tomorrow). Ray took some still pictures of the cygnets riding on both parent's backs.

** Aldo Dorio got a photo of a young of the year SWAMP SPARROW [Bruant des marais] on Wednesday. Note the yellow at the commissure of the bill that would suggest a remnant of the bill of a young bird.

** Brian Stone revisited Mapleton Park on Wednesday to not only find one AUTUMN MEADOWHAWK DRAGONFLY, but a pair in a wheel as late as October 04. It seems late but possibly not for this late-flying dragonfly. Brian also had an EASTERN PHOEBE [Moucherolle phébi] pose nicely.
