** Gordon Rattray visited two sites on Saturday, a small
park in Weldon and the old rail line in Hillsborough. He noted 4 TURKEY VULTURES
[Urubu à tête rouge] floating on thermals, a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER [Paruline
noir et blanc], a nice male YELLOW WARBLER [Paruline jaune], AMERICAN REDSTART
[Paruline flamboyante], WILSON’S WARBLER [Paruline à calotte noire],
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER [Paruline à croupion jaune], SONG SPARROW [Bruant
chanteur], RING-NECKED PHEASANT [Faisan de Colchide], and a COMMON RAVEN [Grand
Corbeau] being harassed by AMERICAN CROWS [Corneille d'Amérique].
** Brian Stone sent several photos from his Ontario visit,
including the WHITE TRILLIUM [Trille grandiflore] which is common in Ontario,
and YELLOW VIOLET [Violette pubescente] in bloom, which we have in limited
numbers in New Brunswick. There are lots of dragonflies out there now, buzzing
around like mosquitos, as they will be here in New Brunswick soon. He got SPINY
BASKET-TAILS [Épithèque épineuse], DOT-TAILED WHITE-FACE [Leucorrhine mouchetée]
and an AMERICAN EMERALD [Cordulie d’Amérique?] dragonfly.
He also got EASTERN COMMA [une espèce de Polygone] butterfly,
GREEN FROG [Grenouille verte], a dark morph GRAY SQUIRREL [Écureuil gris], which
is more common in Ontario, HONEY BEE [Abeille mellifère], MOURNING CLOAK [Morio]
butterfly, MUSTARD WHITE [Piéride des crucifères] butterfly, EASTERN TENT
CATERPILLAR [Livrée d'Amérique], noting the exit hole in their tent, a BROWN
THRASHER [Moqueur roux], and an EASTERN PHOEBE [Moucherolle phébi] that is
building its nest under the eave of a house. He also got a GRAY CATBIRD [Moqueur
chat], a female RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD [Carouge à épaulettes], SCARLET TANAGER
[Piranga écarlate], and a bluet damselfly [une sorte de demoiselle], He is also
starting to find TICKS [tiques] and enjoyed a cooperative WILSON’S SNIPE
[Bécassine de Wilson].
Brian shares an awesome variety of photos, many of which will
hopefully be joining us here in New Brunswick.
** The grandkids, visiting our Miramichi camp this long
weekend, have been very much enjoying the REDBELLY SNAKES [Couleuvre à ventre
rouge] under the black matts. The cool evening of Saturday allowed them to
become very attached to an AMERICAN TOAD [Crapaud d'Amérique] that seemed to
enjoy the warmth of their hands.
