** Rose Alma Mallet has had the two species of
milkweed, Common and Swamp Milkweed planted in her Boudreau West yard near
Shediac for two years now, hoping to attract MONARCH BUTTERFLIES. She had no known visitors until Wednesday
when she was rewarded with two MONARCH BUTTERFLY [Monarque] visitors.
** Doreen Rossitor advises that the WHITE-WINGED DOVE
[Tourterelle à ailes blanches] that visited
her last Saturday only stayed the day, so it is very possibly still in the area
as it may be the same bird John Inman had visit his 225 Mary’s Pt Rd yard in
June. People who have bird feeder yards
should be watching their dove patrons closely for this uncommon-to-New
Brunswick species.
** The IRONWOOD, aka HOP-HORNBEAM [Bois de fer]
tree is not a real common tree in New Brunswick but very much present often as
a single tree or small groups. Dale
Gaskin has one near his 709 Dawson Settlement Rd home which is in full bloom
with its unique blossoms at the moment.
Dale is unable to forward photos, but says anyone is welcome to drop by
to see it. I am attaching some photos I
took in 2011 of this tree.
** We don’t have a large number of species of
grasshoppers in New Brunswick, so we’ll start this summer on an
identification-to-species that get photographed. Brian Stone got a great photo of one on July
15th that turns out to be the MARSH MEADOW GRASSHOPPER [Criquet des
pâtures], the
species confirmed by Bug Guide. Brian’s
specimen happens to be a young one. The
head of the Marsh Meadow Grasshopper is very slanted compared to its kin and
that is a clue to identification.
