**Aldo Dorio got a photo of a GREAT BLUE HERON [Grand Héron] enjoying its Minnow [Méné] lunch. The photo is clear enough. The minnow species may be either a BANDED KILLIFISH [Fondule barré] or MUMMICHOG [Choquemort]. The upturned mouth and banding suggests Banded Killifish. An adult BALD EAGLE [Pygargue à tête blanche] looks on.
**The wet conditions should still be supporting mushroom popups. One relatively easy to identify mushroom that I forgot to add is one that came into a mushroom workshop, the VARIEGATED MOP (Tricholomopsis rutilans) [Tricholome rutilant]. The dense reddish fibrous scales on the cap and stalk, and yellowish gills, make it easy to identify. They grow under coniferous trees, and make a white spore print. It’s not toxic, but its flavour is too unpleasant for it to be an edible.
**It’s that time of year when we get more unexpected birds visiting. It seems to have been very quiet recently, but November and December can still bring lots of surprises. Keep an eye out.
