** Clifford Twist again visited a bog in the back of Riverview (46°01'34.7"N 64°48'55.8"W). A bog is surely an amazing place. Early Sunday morning, Clifford found ARETHUSA [Aréthuse bulbeuse], a.k.a. Dragon’s-mouth Orchid, in prime bloom, LARGE CRANBERRY [gros Atocas], PITCHER-PLANT [Petits cochons], BOG LAUREL [Kalmia à feuilles d’Andromède], and many other plants he was not familiar with. On the way out of the bog, he came across a TUFTED BIRD-DROPPING MOTH [] and even a BLACK BEAR [Ours noir]. Clifford got some nice photos to share.

**Verica LeBlanc in Nelson-Miramichi sends photos of a GROUNDHOG / Woodchuck [Marmotte commune] in a neighbour’s yard that had been travelling the area earlier in the spring. Verica noted earlier on Sunday morning that it had chosen a mate, and love was definitely in the air! Their den appears to be under a shed, or at least that’s where they head when neighbourhood children get too inquisitive.

** Every year, Ray Gauvin has a ROBIN’s [Merle d’Amérique] nest on his property somewhere. This year it was in his car-port, at the end of an aluminum ladder hung under the roof and viewable from the patio, and easy to zoom into undetected. Mother was sure letting you know to keep your distance, even though it was much closer this year. In past years it was buried in kiwi or grape vines. The nest was completed on June 4 with three eggs that day. The chicks were still in the nest as of June 16, gone on the 19th, and not seen after. There was only one day that he could hear the mother Robin really calling out to the chicks or causing a distraction for the chicks on the ground.

Aldo Dorio noted a NORTHERN FLICKER nest with nestlings checking the surroundings looking like they were ready to fledge. The photo is very zoomed in to not disrupt the process. Aldo’s Neguac pair of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS continue to tend their family.

** Yves Poussart got several more great photos to add to the findings of Saturday at White Rock Recreational Area and comments that it was indeed an exceptional site and a very interesting day. We’ll let the photos tell the story, but have to add that the RED-BACKED SALAMANDER [Salamandre cendrée] is one of the salamander group that has evolved to no longer use water-life as part of its life cycle. It lays its eggs in grape-like clusters in rotting wood, from which the young hatch in their watery egg and carry on their mission.

Note Yves’ photo of the electronic ways to download more on the White Rock area.

** Gordon Rattray visited the dyke area behind Gray’s Island, at Hillsborough, on Sunday, to photograph the BIRDS-FOOT TREFOIL [Lotier corniculé] that is blooming in so many sites at the moment. It is a great nitrogen-fixer plant that can make any place it grows a richer spot. He photographed the WHITE BANDED TOOTHED-CARPET moth, FIREFLY [de la famille Lampyridae], HARRIS’S CHECKERSPOT [Damier de Harris] butterfly, showing the flat and erect postures, a KILLDEER [Pluvier kildir], a CLOUDED SULPHUR [Coliade] butterfly and a SILVERY BLUE [Bleu argenté] butterfly, as well as SULFUR CINQUEFOIL [Potentille dressée].

Gordon also gives instructions on how to get an app for computer devices and Google maps on phones for the White Rock area. His instructions are added below.

This will get the complete site for your computer; it contains more
 info than the phone app.

https://www.trailforks.com/region/white-rock-recreation-area

The phone app is called Trailforks and is in the app store.  When
installed you may need to go through the menu to find White Rock as
the app is for several trail systems in NB.
