** It is so great to hear EASTERN
BLUEBIRD [Merlebleu de l'Est] reports. Bob Grant in Cape Spear, near
Tormentine, had a pair arrive to his yard on June 1st and they immediately
began gathering pine needles to begin housekeeping in the same box that they
did last year. Another lucky landlord!
** Germaine Girouard got a photo of an
adult male INDIGO BUNTING [Passerin indigo] in her Shediac Bridge yard on May 31st
–June 1 in company with a CHIPPING SPARROW [Bruant familier] for a nice
size comparison and a male MALLARD DUCK [Canard colvert] that was looking on.
Thanks to Atilla Fust for forwarding Germaine’s nice yard visitor.
** The PINK LADY’S SLIPPER is one of
the first Lady’s Slippers to bloom. Aldo Dorio photographed one at Hay Island
on June 3rd as well as a female NORTHERN PARULA [Paruline à collier]
warbler.
Aldo also photographed 2 very fresh
appearing LUNA MOTHS at Hay Island. The large beautiful Giant Silk Moths are
starting to appear and are always show stoppers. A nice adult AMERICAN REDSTART
also posed on Thursday morning for Aldo
** Roger Burrows presents an
interesting slant to the Red-winged Blackbirds trying to pull the tail feathers
of Sterling Marsh’s Ring-necked Pheasant. Roger comments that he has seen
blackbirds doing that before and wonders if they are after feathers for nest
building. If so they sure seem to prefer them fresh!
** Brian Stone got several photos of a MALLARD
DUCK [Canard colvert] hen with her family around her. I am including several of
Brian’s photos as they are real ‘eye candy’. They were in Hall’s Creek at the
Gorge Rd.
Butterflies flying spotted were SILVERY
BLUE and MOURNING CLOAK.
** I am pleased to have a birth
announcement on Wednesday. Two of the 11 BLACK SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY [Papillon
du céleri] chrysalids have split to have 2 beautiful adult butterflies emerge.
They sure are striking when so freshly emerged. They both have flown off seemingly
to be direct on their mission. I expect the other 9 to emerge over the next few
days and be on their way as well.
I am attaching photos of them wings up
and wings down as well as the chrysalis that one came from very smoothly split
to allow such a seemingly large critter to emerge. I am also attaching a photo
of the nursery cage of mesh with a zipper opening. The stalks with the
chrysalids were held upright in the base with the use of a styrofoam block and
all was left outside all winter. Most of chrysalids compliments of Marguerite
Winsor’s celery patch.
