** A very big thank you to Mac Wilmot
for opening up his 1091 Hillsborough Rd. yard for birders to get an audience
with the SULPHUR-BELLIED FLYCATCHER [Tyran tigré]. I think most visitors were
successful in getting an audience with it. Apparently it had been in the area
for a few days earlier at Mac’s brother’s property nearby. A great bird and it
surely arrived to visit the right feeder yard. Thank you again for your kind
hospitality, Mac. Mac advises to ask folks that may be coming over the next
days to park in his driveway, on the lawn, or wherever. Route 114 is a very
busy highway and parking on the roadway with little pullover room could present
a potential danger.
I have not heard from Mac as of its
presence as of 8:30 AM Thursday but it may well be present as has been moving
between 2 yards over the past 3 to 5 days.
** The fall flush of NORTHERN CARDINALS
[Cardinal rouge] may be under way. Jane Leblanc has had a double whammy with
the arrival of a male to her St. Martins yard followed by a female mate for it
the next day. Here’s hoping it’s the advance guard of this beautiful species.
Jane also got a photo of a few PINE SISKINS [Tarin des pins] and a female
plumaged PURPLE FINCH [Roselin pourpré] on the same feeder for comparison.
** Doreen Rossiter updates recent
activity in her Alma yard. A flock of 50 + PINE SISKINS [Tarin des pins]
arrived on Sunday, as well as a PALM WARBLER [Paruline à couronne rousse]. A
flock of AMERICAN ROBINS [Merle d'Amérique] arrived on Monday and as there is
no Mountain Ash in the Alma area at all they are feasting on Hawthorn berries.
Doreen has one Multiflora Rose bush that appeared on its own and is now
producing the small rosehips that birds very much enjoy. On Wednesday morning
she saw a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD [Moqueur polyglotte] enjoying the rosehips. As
she was watching it an adult NORTHERN SHRIKE [Pie-grièche grise] appeared in
the Hawthorn shrub. She has seen Northern Shrike take Dark-eyed Juncos in the
past and impale them on the Hawthorn thorns. This is Doreen’s earliest recorded
date of seeing a Northern Shrike. Doreen comments that she is really missing
out on the ground birds this year as she is using only hanging feeders due to a
pigeon and rat challenge.
** It is great to be getting all the
NORTHERN CARDINAL [Cardinal rouge] reports from various areas. Aldo Dorio
photographed a sharply dressed male at Tabusintac on Tuesday. Aldo also got a
nice photo of an AMERICAN COOT [Foulque d'Amérique] paying a visit to Hay
island, prominently showing its honker of a white bill.
