**
Jane LeBlanc has a good-sized flock of EVENING GROSBEAKS
[Gros-bec errant] as well to
her St. Martin’s yard. It is interesting
to note their interest in Staghorn Sumac winter-clinging fruit clusters with
their large feeds.
** Aldo Dorio got a photo of a COMMON LOON [Plongeon
huard] near the
Neguac wharf on Saturday. It would appear
to be an adult bird that is moulting into winter plumage. Aldo also got a photo of a LONG-TAILED DUCK [Harelde
kakawi] that is
still showing remnants of breeding plumage.
** It was a pleasant surprise to spot
one EVENING
GROSBEAK [Gros-bec errant] to our
Moncton feeder yard on Saturday. It
looked things over and left to return a few minutes later with a flock of
approximately 25 Evening Grosbeaks. We
are yet another who had not had Evening Grosbeaks to our feeder yard since the
1980s. It sure gave a beautiful splash
of colour to a grey day. They seemed to
prefer ground feeding, but possibly that was because every other feeder was
dripping with PINE SISKINS [Tarin des pins] and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH [Chardonneret
jaune] and
several HOUSE
FINCH [Roselin familier] that were
not about to share any space. It is nice
to see Evening Grosbeaks coming to in-town feeder yards. I did note a few foraging on clinging
Manitoba Maple samara in a yard Manitoba Maple tree as well.
** The NORTHERN CARDINAL [Cardinal rouge]
pair are still around, but have become
very secretive and not amused with the crowd.
