**Thursday’s
snowstorm delivered a smorgasbord of Dark-Eyed Juncos to Jim Carroll’s yard in
Quispamsis. Included in the flock were regular DARK EYED JUNCOS, a couple of SLATE-COLORED
DARK-EYED JUNCOS and the prize, an OREGON DARK-EYED JUNCO. The Oregon appears
to be a juvenile with the streaking on its sides.
The later two
are subspecies of the Dark-eyed junco. The Oregon subspecies is found normally
in western Canada so indeed special to find it with a flock of Dark-eyed Juncos
here in NB.
Jim’s photos
remind us all to take second looks at flocks of Dark-eyed Juncos for these
subspecies as well as some other subspecies
**It has been interesting to get a few reports
of BALTIMORE ORIOLES [Oriole de Baltimore] this week coming to feeder yards.
Jane LeBlanc got a great photo of a Baltimore Oriole that has been in the St.
Martins area for the past few days. It is coming to orange sections at a feeder
yard. Jane also got another photo of her YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER [Paruline à
croupion jaune] that seems to have become a patron, having been present since
Tuesday.
**For those who did not receive notification
by another means, David Christie has been involved with the Christmas Bird
Counts for longer than any living New Brunswicker, but of much greater
significance is that David has been involved with far more Christmas Bird Counts
than anyone in our history. Jim Wilson sits down with Dave Christie to talk
about his experience with the Christmas Bird Count. Check out the link below
and read all about it.
Read all about it in our latest
blog!
