**The
special WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW [Bruant à couronne blanche] visiting Carmella
Melanson got accidentally left off the photo lineup yesterday. It is up front
today, to look closely at, and scroll down to read the write-up on it from
yesterday.
**Nature
Moncton has been making lots of plans for 2021. Fred Richards has just
completed swallow nest box #482 for free distribution. For anyone who would like
some, leave your name and the number you would like, and in-town pickup can
happen any time.
Members’
Night is coming up on January 19th, so let Fred Richards know if you have
anything to share, at fredrichards@rogers.com. Fred will work anyone through
the effective virtual method that he has developed. Speakers are lined up for
the upcoming season, and the write-ups should be on the website soon.
**David
Cannon had a COMMON REDPOLL [Sizerin flammé] facing him New Year’s morning,
giving him its ‘angry bird’ look. The feeder it is sitting above is empty,
perhaps explaining the apparent disposition. They had two Common Redpolls,
neither with a pink or red breast or excessive streaking on their underside.
**John
Massey has 3 male (buck) WHITE-TAILED DEER [Chevreuil] that come to feeder
troughs in woods behind his Dieppe home. The antlers are still very much intact
but will soon be dropping. One of the deer has lesions in the facial area that
seem extensive but is obviously otherwise eating and an average body weight. A
consultation with the Atlantic Vet College will be sought.
Also good news from John: He erected 12 Nature
Moncton swallow boxes on Friday, to start the new year off right.
**Ray Gauvin was out again, checking on the
first moon to appear in 2021 at 12:01 a.m. Friday morning. It was a Waning
Gibbous Moon, still at 91.4%.
**This
particular Moon view was appreciated by many. Yvette Richard got a striking
view from Caissie Cape Wharf at 7:35 PM on January 1 as it rose and Brian Stone
got a special photo of a LUNAR HALO around the Moon on Friday night which
likely was a portent of the storm we are having today.
**Amanda
MacDonald had a surprise live Christmas tree ornament pop in an open door to
her tree. A BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE [Mésange à tête noire] came in, perched, and
gave a few vocalizations before being safely returned to the outdoors.
**Pat Gibbs
completed a form for Centennial Park in Moncton as a site review for
birdability. Pat suggests others go to the site below to contribute more site
reviews to other places they may go to see birds.

**As I suspect will happen to more feeder
yards the next few days, my flock of two COMMON REDPOLLS [Sizerin flammé] has
swollen to a dozen, which may mean a few more feeders to go up, as the PINE
SISKINS [Tarin des pins], AMERICAN GOLDFINCH [Chardonneret jaune], AMERICAN
TREE SPARROWS [Bruant hudsonien], and HOUSE FINCH [Roselin familier] are not
amused with the competition.
