** There have not been many SNOWY OWL
[Harfang des neiges] observations so far this year but Yvette Richard captured
a beautiful shot of this magnificent owl at the Cassie Cape wharf on Tuesday
around 3:00 pm. We have often said that barred and darker individuals are young
birds or females but Roger Leblanc showed that is not always the case in a
documentary he did on the Snowy Owl population in Saskatchewan. A special thank
you to Yvette for sharing her find with the rest of us, it’s almost like being
there!
** Grant Ramsey was surprised to find a
male NORTHERN FLICKER [Pic flamboyant] at his back door on Tuesday afternoon.
It took about 5 minutes to pick at the junction of the deck and foundation,
looking for what Grant comments he does not know what it was looking for. There
have been very few reports of Northern Flickers to feeder yards so far this
winter. They often tend to visit suet feeders when we have a population
overwinter. The black ‘whisker’ patch identifies it as a male.
** Brian Stone got another photo of a BALD
EAGLE [Pygargue à tête blanche] on Tuesday that was watching over Jones Lake
for potential lunch. This was a mature bird with a touch of Petitcodiac River
silt on its tail.
