**Jane
Wood was recently in Cumberland
Bay, Queens County, at a house just across the road from Grand Bay. Nine Wild Turkeys showed up Saturday morning
and were there off and on all day. They were much bigger and prettier than she
had thought they might be. Photos were taken from several windows, but most are
a bit blurry as there were fairly heavy screens on those windows. Also the
birds were in constant motion. They certainly covered a lot of ground. Jane attaches
photos. It was a lot of fun to watch them. It’s a great time to see them as
they tend to travel in groups and winter.
Jane doesn’t have much at her feeders these days, There are Blue Jays, Rock Pigeons, Mourning Doves,
and Black-capped Chickadees. Jane
does have 2 White-breasted Nuthatches that
visit 2 or 3 times a week. She is waiting to see if the pair of Northern Cardinals that were present most
of last winter make another appearance. They disappeared in the spring and have
not been seen since.
**On Saturday, Brian Stone only
"natured" from the comfort of his kitchen. For the first time in
years, he saw a cock Ring-necked Pheasant running through his back yard and managed
a few quick photos. This bird must be very street smart as Brian lives on
Mountain Road in Moncton.
**Jane and Ed
LeBlanc returned to their St. Martins home on Nov. 19th, to hear some AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES. They went inside,
peaked out the window, and saw a half dozen of them eating the seed heads of
PURPLE CONEFLOWERS in the flower bed. Jane didn't realize when she placed the
flower bed where it is that it would be an excellent spot to photograph birds
through the window (out of the rain, snow and cold!!).
(Editor’s
note: coneflower seed heads are an American Goldfinch favourite and an
excellent choice for a bird friendly yard. I have some brewing in my own yard
after hearing many reports)
