** Louise Nichols sends some photos of small things in their yard: a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth enjoying the flowers in a flower bed; a Leafhopper Bug showing off its green camouflage, a Syrphid Fly that was caught in the process of laying an egg on some goldenrod; and the very striking caterpillar of the Brown-hooded Owlet Moth.
**Christine
Lever had a grasshopper getting a close-up look at her through a window, and Christine decided to return the favour with a photo from an angle we seldom
see.
Christine comments, “I thought this was an interesting
view of him/her as you can see their feet and the breastplate that looks like a
turtle shell! It also has a lovely smile!”
(Editor’s
comment: this under view really shows those ‘toe pads’ of the appendages that
allow attachment to any surface, including a windowpane.)
**Aldo
Dorio photographed a young-of-the-year Spotted Sandpiper at Hay
Island on Friday. The juvenile birds of the species lack the boldly spotted
breast of the parent birds at this time of year.
Aldo also
photographed a Great Blue Heron very skillfully partaking of eel prey.
