**This is the second year in a row that a male Pileated Woodpecker has chosen a hollow tree in Brian Coyle’s back
yard, with a hole in it, to drum on. It is very clever and effective. Brian was
able to get an excellent video of the woodpecker announcing his territory.
Check it out at the link below:
**Gordon Rattray had a yard full of birds filling up on the cracked corn, sunflower seeds, and peanut butter. Gordon got photographs of a pair of ring-necked pheasants that are daily visitors; a second female was camera-shy. The pheasants have been visiting several times a day since middle winter. Gordon was also able to capture photographs of a common grackle and a song sparrow. Mixed with the song sparrows were many dark-eyed juncos. To complete the show, Gordon saw brown creeper, red-breasted nuthatch, white breasted nuthatches, and the always-present American goldfinch, with a pair of purple finches at the feeder.
**Nelson Poirier has had a pair of northern cardinal patrons to his feeder yard all winter and has been
watching their menu preference. There is quite a varied menu available to them.
Nelson has noted they seem to have a preference for sunflower chips and white
proso millet.
Several literature references suggest that safflower seed is a cardinal favourite. Nelson tried that, but this pair didn’t seem
particularly impressed.
They have been vocalizing very loudly for the past
10 days.
