** Larry Sherrard noted a lot of AMERICAN ROBINS [Merle d'Amérique] on the
mud flats of the Petitcodiac River in Lower Coverdale recently, and got a photo
of a few. I suspect that they may be interested in Polychaete Worms on the
exposed mud flats that would be a very nutritious winter snack.
** It's that interesting time of year again when we can get to see seals on
the ice floes off our shores. Louise Nichols was in the Cap Brule area on
Wednesday and saw a distant object that looked like a lump of dark ice at first,
but a few photos revealed the silhouette of a seal. It's difficult to identify
from the documentary photos. It has the shape of a Grey Seal, a species where
the females should have already had pups. Some Harp Seals show up at this time
of year as well, but they have not pupped as yet.
** Several folks have mentioned how pleased they are with the use of a
heated dog water dish as a water source for winter birds. Princess Auto carries
them, I think priced under fifteen dollars. They are stainless steel and
apparently clean very easily. Paul Melanson shares a photo of one that he is
using, in action on the cool day of Monday. I notice the EUROPEAN STARLING
[Étourneau sansonnet] has already taken on the nearly all yellow bill of
spring.
