April 2 2016

**Louise Nichols made a run to the St-Thomas Wharf on Wednesday to capture more great photos of the SCOTER [Macreuse] show going on there. Louise also stopped at other shore areas to get some COMMON MERGANSERS [Grand Harle] in their peak breeding plumage, as well as GREATER SCAUP [Fuligule milouinan]. The Scoter show may not last all that long, as they will soon be on their route north to set up breeding territories, so make sure to take any opportunities to have an audience with them.

**Gary Capson had a female EVENING GROSBEAK [Gros-bec errant] and a male PURPLE FINCH [Roselin pourpré] that posed beautifully, to capture a portrait of these birds that nicely shows the large, powerful beaks of these two species. Gary also sends a nice photo of a CHIPMUNK [Suisse] already filling pouches to store for later use. Nothing like getting an early start.

**REDPOLLS [Sizerin] are still arriving to yards. Louise and Maurice Richard started seeing Redpolls for the first time this winter at their Acadieville cabin. They also enjoyed watching a big fat BEAVER [Castor] busy at work at the edge of the Kouchibouguac River beside them.

**There have been many comments about the sudden arrival of NORTHERN FLICKERS [Pic flamboyant]. Marlene Hickman had one arrive to her Dorchester yard that seemed to awkwardly feed at her suet feeder.

**I had purchased an artificial clay CLIFF SWALLOW [Hirondelle à front blanc] nest many years ago, and never had the opportunity to get it up in an area Cliff Swallows were using. I noted a good place to give it a try at Steve and Rose Dernier’s on the Irishtown Road when noticed that they had Cliff Swallows coming to the ledges over their house windows and garage. I asked Steve if he would put it up where the nests on the garage were. He did a beautiful job of placing it, and it will be interesting to watch if it is used in our climate. A photo of the newly-erected artificial clay nest structure is attached. Waiting to see what happens.
