**Mike Britton was able to capture an awesome photo of a
male BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER as it worked tree bark. Only the male sports the
yellow crown patch. We just don't get to see this woodpecker species very often.
Mike also got a photo of a RED ADMIRAL butterfly
nectaring.
The new breeds of point and shoot long zoom high
resolution cameras sure do allow for nice photos when these lucky moments
present themselves.
**Michelle Little, in Elgin, comments she gets a lot of
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS patrons, however with the young now out and the males
not departed yet, she is getting up to 30-40 visitors a day to her hummer
feeders.
**Brian Stone and I paid a visit to the Caledonia trail
and small bog on the back adjacent side of the Irishtown Nature Park on Tuesday.
A lot of clear cutting is going on there now. Items of interest were collecting
BLACK TRUMPET and CHANTERELLE mushrooms, several INDIAN PIPE plants at their
prime, PINE SAP plants that had gone past their prime, PITCHER plants with
loaded pitcher vessels of water, many SUNDEW plants in bloom but for some reason
only one bloom open on each flower head, a very distant RED-TAILED HAWK, a
family of RING NECKED PHEASANTS in transitional plumage on Shepody marsh, a
VICEROY BUTTERFLY, which was one of the few butterflies noted, a vocalizing
GROUNDHOG under Brian's home deck, an animal seldom heard
vocalizing.
