Maurice Richard was able to capture some photos of a very
busy pair of Gray Catbirds around the shrubbery of their Moncton home that are
obviously feeding young. Note the plum coloured under tail covert that shows in
one photo that is not easily seen but always there.
**White Admiral butterflies are flying in good numbers
at the moment. Aldo Dorio got a few photos of one from the top and side view on
Tuesday.
**Dave Christie points out a mislabeled photo from the
Tuesday edition. The photo labelled SEMIPALMATED PLOVER should be KILLDEER.
Dave points out the red eye ring, the white forehead extending to the back of
the eye and the black bill base say killdeer. The bill does appear shorter but
that's probably due to the head being turned away. The tail length compared to
the wingtip also is suspicious and the blade of grass that obscures where the
second neck band should be. There's also a faint indication of orangey
coloration forward to the the back of the tail. The photo is corrected and
resubmitted today.
**When Louise Nichols and I visited the bog near
Sackville on June 30, we noted a small plant bloom that appeared to be dwarf
huckleberry. Sean Blaney confirmed that but commented it seemed like a very
small plant to have the number of blooms. This plant produces a very tasty berry
when it fruits later season.
