** A nice
spring visitor to Marlene Hickman on Wednesday to her Dorchester yard when a BALTIMORE ORIOLE [Oriole de Baltimore] arrived. It seemed to favour feeding on some apples in
a feeder. It’s time to get oranges or
pink grapefruit halves out impaled on branches.
** The
spring flowers are getting underway. A
note from Dave Christie I missed on May 8th when Dave reported that
many hundreds of TROUT LILY [L’érythrone d’Amérique] leaves had emerged on
Middle Island at Mary’s Point, but no sign of a flower or even a bud on that
date. He did find 15 flowering SPRING
BEAUTY plants, 30 to 40 LARGE-LEAVED WHITE VIOLETS and 5 STRAWBERRY plants
aside his driveway. It’s time to be
photographing wildflowers to share with the group. Some ephemeral spring ones should be
appearing this weekend. I did note FALSE
HELLEBORE [Tabac du diable], TRILLIUM and BLOODROOT emerging on Friday on the
Miramichi River, and the first leaves of HEPATICA [Les hépatiques] emerging at
a cedar bog in Halcomb. None were in
bloom.
** Dave and
Bonnie Miller share a few more interesting photos of their Alberta visit. Dave got a photo of an AUDUBON’S WARBLER
which is the western version of our common Yellow-rumped Warbler. The distinguishing feature between the two is
the yellow throat of the Audubon’s warbler whereas the throat is white on the
eastern YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER [Paruline à croupion
jaune]. The Audubon’s is a casual
visitor in the east. Dave also got a
photo of an AMERICAN DIPPER which does not drop by New Brunswick. This bird will actually walk under the water
of streams to forage on underwater insects.
Dave also shares a photo of the commonly seen MOUNTAIN SHEEP in Alberta
as well as a GOLDEN-MANTLED GROUND SQUIRREL we do not have in NB but looks
similar to our EASTERN CHIPMUNK but larger in size.
