** Roger LeBlanc has had a real surprise with one of his Nature Moncton
nest boxes. One set up on a pole in the middle of a field seems to have been
taken up by a female DOWNY WOODPECKER [Pic mineur], which is going in and out
freely and frequently. It appears that she has chosen it as her nesting cavity.
Roger will keep us posted on this rather unexpected situation.
** The first WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS [Bruant à couronne blanche] are
starting to move through on their route north. Fred and Lynn Dubé had one drop
by their Lower Coverdale feeder yard to re-fuel on Saturday.
** Winston Fullerton reports that his first ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK
[Cardinal à poitrine rose], a male, arrived at his Moncton area feeder on May
4.
** Ray Gauvin had a CHIPPING SPARROW [Bruant familier] and a WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW [Bruant à gorge blanche] lunching side by side on Saturday, for a
photo.
** I've noticed a very sudden influx of female RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS
[Carouge à épaulettes] in our Moncton feeder yard the past few days. I had not
seen any in the yard previously.
** The first RED-BELLY SNAKES [Couleuvre à ventre rouge] started to
appear under black boot mats placed around our Little SW Miramichi camp yard on
Friday. A photo of a brown morph is attached. These small, 6 to 12 inch snakes
are very gentle. Apparently they have a liking for slugs. Their underside is
completely red, which gives them their name. The other colour morph they in is a
dark slate colour on top.
