** A very unusual day with only a few reports. Rainy weekends do
that.
** Gerald Kenna was in the right place at the right time on June 12, to
witness a COMMON SNAPPING TURTLE [Chélydre serpentine] laying her eggs in a
gravel bank at Youngs Cove. He went back later in the day and noted the
deposition site completely covered. Some nice pictures are attached.
The Snapping Turtle is classed as of special concern in New Brunswick. When
mature, they lay 19 to 41 spherical eggs each year that will usually hatch in
September or October unless the ground gets too cold in which case they will
overwinter and come out the next spring. Snapping Turtles come to land only to
lay eggs, spending the rest of the year in water. Grand Lake is a popular spot
for them. RACCOONS [Raton laveur] are a serious predator of the nests, if they
find them.
** This coming Tuesday night, June 20, is the last meeting night of the
season for Nature Moncton. We’ll have a presentation of a collection of some of
the many photos contributed to Information Line over the past year and touch on
every aspect of Mother Nature’s world, with appropriate comments from the
presenter, Nelson Poirier, and audience participation. It should be a nice
chance to re-acquaint ourselves with many of the things that we will be seeing
over the upcoming seasons. The write-up for that presentation is attached.

Variety show of Mother Nature in New Brunswick
Presenter: Nelson Poirier
The Nature Moncton Information Line and BlogSpot have been the beneficiary of many great photos of birds, mammals, butterflies, dragonflies, insects, mushrooms, and more over the past year.
Nature Moncton will end its meeting season June 20 with a variety show of a collection of these photographs with short commentary on each by Nelson Poirier.
It will be a great kickoff to the spring-summer season to refresh our memories of what to watch for in beautiful New Brunswick in forest, field, stream, and sky.
