**Brian Coyle reports a WHITE-TAILED DEER fawn was found
hiding in the grass between the rows of grapes at the Magnetic Hill Winery at
noon on Tuesday. The doe came back and the fawn fed then the mother left with
the fawn in tow.
**On one of the field trips at the Festival of Nature
weekend we spotted a small group of the early appearing orchid EARLY CORALROOT.
Photographs are attached. Also the plant GOLDTHREAD was in bloom. This plant
has a golden-orange root.
**Judy and Sterling Marsh were in the Pleasantvale area
on Sunday and spotted a pair of COMMON NIGHTHAWKS. Photos are difficult but the
profile is visible with the distinct white wing patches.
On Monday they were on the Tantramar marsh to note 30+
TREE SWALLOWS enjoying the foraging resulting from a newly installed Ducks
Unlimited impoundment near the covered bridge.
**Georges Brun spotted a BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE in his
Moncton yard with excessive white plumage to suggest it to be a partial white
albino. These specimens are always unique as only one such individual occurs.
**Mac Wilmont lives in Lower Coverdale, aside the
Petitcodiac River. For the past three years he has found MOOSE tracks in a
garden plot within days of this time of year that appear to have come from
crossing the river. An interesting repeated scenario.
Mac jestingly comments maybe the erection of a moose
crossing sign may be indicated.
**The mosquitos must have been in ecstasy this past
weekend to see 200 ripe naturalists arrive to forage off at the Festival of
Nature weekend. Melanie Bourque encouraged me to photograph one very well fed
female to show how we give back!
**Aldo Dorio got a nice photo of a female COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT warbler that shows just how conservatively this lady dresses
compared to her lone ranger masked partner.
**The Miramichi lagoon behind the Superstore is laden
with waterfowl of several species at the moment. Many are males that are not in
to eclipse plumage yet. There seems to be a surprisingly number of WOOD DUCKS in
the stud lineup. I was also a bit surprised to see a DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT
contentedly perched on a utility wire on Tuesday evening. Maybe they do this
more than I think but seems I seldom see them perched on wires, so caused a
wheelie to go back to see what bird species it was.
