** An always welcome sound to hear is a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO [Coulicou à bec noir] found by Elaine Gallant in the Parlee Beach area, where the proposed campground is to be built. It was by a bicycle trail at a washout that may not be repaired this year. Elaine clearly heard the bird vocalizing about 20 times, but never got a good look at it, a common Black-billed Cuckoo scenario.
** Catherine Hamilton spotted and photographed a COMMON LOON
[Plongeon huard] on the lagoon along the Petitcodiac Waterfowl Trail recently.
She had never seen one there before. It was probably nesting elsewhere and
possibly the nest failed. It appears to be moulting out of breeding plumage.
** Mac Wilmot got photos of some of the insect life around
his Guagus camp on the Renous River, including an ATLANTIS FRITILLARY [Argynnne
de l'Atlantique], LONG DASH SKIPPER [Hespérie mystique], a nice close-up of our
all-important bumblebee species on a pollination mission, and a CHALK-FRONTED
CORPORAL [La Julienne] dragonfly. The TRICOLORED BUMBLEBEE has become one of our
most common bumblebees but a hind body view would be needed to be
sure.
** Another Nature Moncton nest box is about to send forth a
family. Lois Budd erected box #20 and says her family is very much enjoying
watching the TREE SWALLOW [Hirondelle bicolore] family mission in
progress.
** Brian Stone got some photos of a WILLET [Chevalier
semipalmé] and a few other shorebirds sharing the same turf on Friday. GREATER
YELLOWLEGS [Grand Chevalier] had also arrived at that spot. Brian has some views
at different angles of GREAT SPANGLED FRITTILLARY [Argynne cybèle], CABBAGE
BUTTERFLY [Piéride de chou] and a NORTHERN PEARLY-EYE [Satyre
perlé].
