** Danny Sullivan got some nice photos of a NORTHERN PEARLY-EYE [Satyre
perlé] butterfly and a NORTHERN CRESCENT [Croissant perlé]. As mentioned
earlier, the Northern Pearly-eye is one of the few truly shade-loving
butterflies that is more apt to fly on cloudy days than other butterflies, and
often late in the day.
** Newly fledged AMERICAN ROBINS [Merle d'Amérique] are abundant at the
moment. Brian Stone photographed a typically spotted youngster in his home yard
on Saturday.
** Aldo Dorio got a photo of a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON [Bihoreau gris] in
Tracadie on Friday. There has been a rookery of this species in the Lamèque
area.
** On Saturday I came across some MOURNING CLOAK [Morio] butterfly
caterpillars foraging on RED OSIER DOGWOOD [Hart rouge] leaves. It’s a striking
caterpillar I’ve never seen before. It has a spiny, black body speckled with
white and with a row of eight red blotches along the middle of the back. Note
the orange-red prolegs and anal prolegs. A colourful caterpillar, they were
approximately 5.5 cm in length.
