**A
few WILLETS [Chevalier semipalmé] were enjoying the area of the ebbing tide in
Cormierville on Friday. The familiar-to-us shorebirds that nest along the
shoreline look very plain when foraging, but close-up views do show that
signature narrow white eye-ring and white slash on the forehead area.
Identification is much more obvious when the wings lift to show the flash of
thick white bands on the wing, and the very distinctive loud “pill-will-willet”
calls. A pleasant shorebird to stay with us in New Brunswick and enjoy their
antics.
**On
June 30th
I collected eggs laid by a BIG POPLAR SPHINX [Pachysphinx
modesta].
They hatched out in seven days, and at the moment are chowing down on freshly
gathered ASPEN [Tremble] leaves in a large dish, and growing fast. The photo may
seem like they are large, but they are approximately
1
cm
in
length at the moment. I hope to let them grow out, pupate, and release them
next spring. More photos will follow as the family grows.
