** A nice surprise for Carmella Melanson was to find a
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER [Bécasseau de Baird] among the shorebirds at the Petit-Cap
beach area on Monday. This Sandpiper moves through New Brunswick in small
numbers and it is always special to see it and pick it out from the similar
White-rumped Sandpiper. The Petit-Cap beach has become a shorebird hot spot,
especially at rising tide when the shorebirds come towards
you.
** BULLFROGS [Ouaouaron]
can be quite large. Edmund Redfield and his team came across a
very large one during their fish monitoring work on the Petitcodiac River at
Salisbury. The photo shows the size of this dude.
** Brian Stone photographed BRISTLY SARSAPARILLA berry
clumps that are now in fruit. This plant can grow up to a meter tall. Brian had
nine immature AMERICAN ROBINS [Merle d'Amérique] and two
adults foraging on the ground behind his Moncton home on Monday. He also could
not resist capturing some of the interesting cloud formations he noted the same
day. A COMMON NIGHTHAWK [Engoulevent d'Amérique] was
hawking insects around his home on Monday afternoon and evening but successfully
eluded a good photo.
** Aldo Dorio got a photo of a
EUROPEAN STARLING [Étourneau sansonnet] that suggests it to be a
young-of-the-year bird with a chest showing spotting ready for winter plumage.
Aldo also photographed a fledgling CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLER [Paruline à flancs marron] clearly already showing its yellow crown and
chestnut side bar even though a bit rough around the edges. A fledgling
RED-EYED VIREO [Viréo aux yeux rouges] also joined the photo
parade.
** A correction on the meeting time of the Taylor Rd. Nature Moncton Field
Trip set for August 28 ( Monday ). The meeting time is 7:00 AM, not 7:30
AM as was posted yesterday. The Blogspot is correct.
