** Ken and Uli Irlich had a 4 cm. Cranefly day perch on their screen door, most of the day on Tuesday. We have several different species of Craneflies in New Brunswick. Some look like giant mosquitoes, but this speciman is one of the colourful ones. They are harmless to humans and out on mating missions as adults. The underground grubs are called Leather-jackets.
** Krista Doyle sends an interesting photo of four WHITE-TAILED DEER [Cerf de Virginie]. Two are does, while two appear to be suspected two year old bucks. They have not set out on their own yet, which will be happening very soon, approaching the fall rut. Krista also sends a delicious photo of plump ripening Blackberries.
**Aldo Dorio got more photos of BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER [Pluvier argenté] at Hay Island on Tuesday, still with breeding plumage remnants. This species will be with us for a time yet with the adults changing into basic winter plumage. It is always interesting to keep an eye open for AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER [Pluvier bronzé] that are similar, but less common and often stay with us until late into the season as well.
**Brian Stone got a few more nature photos in the Perth area of Ontario on Tuesday to include a Yellow Collared Scape Moth. This moth has similarities to the Virgina Ctenucha, that is a very commonly seen day flying moth that looks like a butterfly, but the the Yellow Collared Scape Moth is smaller, not as dark, lacks a blue body when in flight and the collar is yellow instead of the head. PAINTED TURTLES [Tortue peinte] are quite regular in that area as well. Brian also got an excellent close-up photo of the Leaf Footed Bug thay gets its name from the leaf-like structure on the hind leg that resembles a leaf.
** The COMMON NIGHTHAWK [Engoulevent d'Amérique] migration is in full swing at the moment, seeing them hawking insects during the day as they migrate south in groups. It was nice to see 50 plus cavorting in the sky at 6pm on Tuesday evening along the Little South West MiramichiRiver.
