**A
correction in the labelling of a dragonfly on yesterday’s edition which is
corrected at the blog spot. The photo labelled Cherry Faced Meadowhawk
Dragonfly should have been Autumn Meadowhawk Dragonfly. The brown legs are the
feature that nicely identifies it in Shawn Cormier’s excellent photo. Some
Meadowhawks can be easily confused in
photos and in the flesh but there are single clues in some that are very
helpful. That corrected photo is re-attached today.
** Aldo
Dorio got a photo of ripe Bayberries at Hay Island. This shrub likes being near
salt water. The berries consists of very large seeds covered by a lipid layer
which has been used as a fragrance for candle wax. It is also known to be a
survival food for TREE SWALLOW [Hirondelle bicolore] and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER
[Paruline à croupion jaune].
**Brian
Stone spotted a Fingered Daggermoth caterpillar near his home doorstep on
Tuesday. It co-operated for a good photo and was trailing a lot of silk so may
have been looking for a site to pupate to its cocoon stage.
** The
captive Black-necked Swan pair at the large roadside man made pond in Lower
Coverdale on Route 114 are caring for two cygnets at the moment. They are very
attentive parents. The cygnets can swim on their own but are quick to ride on
the parents back. At times, when they are on the parents back, the parent will
raise a wing to completely hide them. This swan species is native to South
America.
