** This is the season of mushroom
abundance. The Nature Moncton Activities Committee has adopted the idea of a
theme for the second half of the monthly meetings. The first half of the
meeting next Tuesday night, Oct. 16, will be a presentation by Heather Loomer
on New Brunswick’s Protected Natural areas. The theme for the second half will be
“Wild Mushrooms”, and will include identification tips about good edibles,
non-edibles, culinary tips or whatever participants want to hear about. However
we need lots of specimens. Participants are asked to start gathering specimens
up to five days in advance to bring to show and tell tables that will be set up
where specimens can be identified and discussed. Try to gather fresh specimens
if possible. Place them in damp moss in a flat container and refrigerate them
clearly marked with a large felt marker “Do Not Eat!”. Do not store them in a
plastic bag. The specimens that folks bring in will be an important part of the
event, and we will see a much greater variety of mushrooms than on a field
foray to one habitat. Folks bringing in specimens are asked to come early at
6:30 pm so that specimens can be laid out on tables and be ready to start at
8:00, after the main presentation. Start gathering now as there are lots out
there!
