** A short and sweet message
today; rainy days do that. More of our northern sparrow friends are dropping in
to visit feeder yards on their flight south from breeding grounds to the north.
Dave Christie had a FOX SPARROW [Bruant fauve] fueling in his Mary’s Point yard
on Sunday, and he saw a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW [Bruant à couronne blanche]
travelling with other sparrows on Middle Island of Mary’s Point on Saturday,
Dave’s first record of the fall.
**
Richard Perron got a photo of a colourful PREDATORY STINK BUG [Pentatome], in the subfamily Asopinae, consuming
the contents of a caterpillar earlier in fall. Not all stinkbugs are predatory
on caterpillars but this one sure is. Richard got photos of it in the act.
Being photographed did not interrupt its predatory meal. Richard also sends a
photo of a large group of VIOLET POLYPORE [Polypore] mushrooms from the
Caledonia Gorge field trip, as they play their role in digesting a rotting
tree, to return it to the forest floor. If seen from the underside when fresh,
the violet colour would show clearly as these are.
** Here’s a heads-up reminder
that Nature Moncton’s visit to the Atlantic Wildlife Institute is re-scheduled
for this coming Sunday afternoon, Nov. 4. The website write-up has the wrong
date now, but meeting times will be the same.
Shortly after that, on Wednesday evening, Nov. 7, we will be navigating
iNaturalist night with Sean Blaney. Don’t forget that this tool can be used on
a laptop, smart phone or both. Many folks are using this site as a tool to
identify photographed items.
More detail on these events will follow. Signup for them is with
Activities Committee chairperson, Louise Nichols, at nicholsl@eastlink.ca.
