** Georges Brun has been able to confirm his recent sighting of a SHORT-EARED OWL [Hibou des marais] on the Riverview Marsh, in spite of the rain and fog on Saturday. With the help of harassing AM. CROWS [Corneille d’Amérique], he was able to get better than documentary photos. It is interesting to note at least one of these elusive owls is back at that site this season, along with other raptors being sighted in this general area. It is making for some potential close-to-home birdwatching.

** Dave Christie made a walk to the Mary’s Point beach on Saturday morning, to note the complete marsh flooded and the beach covered with the full-moon tide. He did find something that he had never found at Mary’s Point before, a COMMON MURRE [Guillemot marmette], which was recently deceased for some unknown reason and being recycled by CROWS [Corneille] and RAVENS [Grand Corbeau]. Dave thinks he has seen murres (probably THICK-BILLED MURRE [Guillemot de Brünnich] at Waterside but never at Mary’s Point.

There has also been a young-of-the year GREAT BLUE HERON [Grand Héron] staying in the Daley Creek marsh area, the marsh that empties the Lars Larsen Marsh. It has a dark head without the adult’s white crown patch. It is seen actively fishing the creek as the high tide comes in to fill the creek.

Dave comments that his feeder area is inundated with BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES [Mésange à tête noire] this year but sparrows, except for WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS [Bruant à gorge blanche], now down to four, and a SONG SPARROW [Bruant chanteur] have vacated.
