** Catherine Hamilton had a very pleasant surprise when she visited the Petitcodiac Waterfowl Trail on Saturday and found a pair of HARLEQUIN DUCKS [Arlequin plongeur] that posed for photos. We seem to be seeing this species in more unexpected locations in recent years. This is the first time Catherine has ever seen Harlequins at these ponds, although she checks them often and has reported many other waterfowl species.

** Georges Brun advises that he had reliable reports that Gilberte and Sam Melanson that a HARBOUR PORPOISE [Marsouin commun] had been seen in the Petitcodiac River at the mouth of Halls Creek on April 24. On May 3, Georges spotted a HARBOUR SEAL [Phoque commun] three times, just upriver, between Halls Creek and Bore Park. Photos were very hard to get. There are obviously fish in the river of interest to these mammals. They sure are not there looking for popsicles! The SMELT [Éperlan] run is on, but I’m not sure what other fish, possibly of larger size, may be running yet.
