** Elaine Galant got a video clip of a RAZORBILL [Petit Pingouin] auk when she visited Machias Seal Island last week. Take a look at this beautiful bird at the attached link.

** Brian Stone visited the Gorge Rd. milkweed patch on Wednesday with a value added bonus of getting a MONARCH BUTTERFLY [Monarque] there. Other items of interest were good observations of a FOURTEEN-SPOTTED LADY BEETLE, a HUMMINGBIRD CLEARWING MOTH, a SLENDER CRAB SPIDER, and a WHITE-SPOTTED SAWYER BEETLE.

** I visited an area in Miramichi on Wednesday to check on some orchids that Jim Saunders had found. It was an unusual place to expect orchids to grow being an old parking lot abandoned many years ago. A significant number of ROSE POGONIA ORCHIDS and CLUB SPUR ORCHIDS were in bloom. YELLOW LADIES’- TRESSES ORCHIDS were found in the same spot last fall. Folks will now be watching this unlikely area to see if other orchid gems appear. It was a very unexpected orchid display.

Also while there a SPOTTED SANDPIPER [Chevalier grivelĂ©] protested loudly over Sadie my dog’s presence, which again seemed an unusual place for a Spotted Sandpiper to be nesting. I also stopped by a milkweed patch and spotted a male MONARCH BUTTERFLY [Monarque] bouncing about, and one 2 inch long caterpillar, but no eggs were found.
Several moths also visited the UV moth light to include LAUREL SPHINX, ONE-EYED SPHINX, EASTERN TENT CATERPILLAR MOTH and several other species.
A NORTHERN CATALPA tree is a mass of beautiful orchid-like blooms. This is a special tree that we have named Janet. Janet MacMillan brought a pod of seeds for identification many years ago and planted some of the seeds indoors. One of those is now a 25 foot high tree sporting its floral display and huge leaves to become a real attention grabber in the midst of our camp yard.
