**Debbie Batog sends some
photos, taken by a relative, of the two eaglets in the McKees Mills BALD EAGLE [Pygargue à tête blanche] nest.
They were taken on July 18th, and they were stretching wings at that point, so
inaugural flights may be on their minds.
**Debbie Guiler got a photo of a LUNA MOTH [Papillon lune] day-perched at the
Petro-Pass location near Magnetic Hill recently. It would seem late to be
getting a Luna Moth so freshly-minted looking as in Debbie’s picture. Debbie
had never seen one before, but recognized it immediately from her Girl Guide
outings.
**Gordon Rattray took
photos of a few of our common flowers blooming at the moment to colour the
countryside, including the JEWEL-WEED a.k.a. TOUCH-ME-NOT [Chou sauvage],
SHINLEAF (Pyrola) [Pyrole elliptique], SWAMP-CANDLES [Lysimaque terrestre],
wild Rose (suspecting it to be VIRGINIA ROSE [Rosier de virginie]),CHICORY
[Chicorée sauvage], and Fleabane [Vergerette annuelle]. Our many wild flowers
may be eye candy for us, but their pollen is very sought after by many insects
and most importantly, BUMBLEBEES [Bourdon]. Gordon also visited Gray Brook
Marsh to find a fledged family of BELTED KINGFISHERS [Martin-pêcheur
d'Amérique] assembled near the dam. He also got a nice photo of a HUMMINGBIRD
CLEARWING MOTH [Sphinx colibri] nectaring. Note the incredibly long proboscis
sucking up the sweet nectar reward. A WHITE ADMIRAL BUTTERFLY [Amiral] posed
nicely to show the underwing design.
**Jane LeBlanc shares a
photo of TURK'S-CAP LILY [Lis superbe] she transplanted into her St. Martins yard.
It is native to the south of us, but has been introduced into New Brunswick. A
very beautiful Lily.
**Donat Richard, brother
of Marguerite Winsor, spotted the GREAT EGRET [Grande Aigrette] across from
Route 11 near the Miramichi Marsh. It has been in the area for at least the
last three to four days, and spotted by local birders in Miramichi. It seems to
be getting comfortable there.
**Mac Wilmot comments how
he notes the complexity of the design of the COMMON MILKWEED [Herbe à coton]
blooms in his Lower Coverdale yard. We seem to get so caught up looking for
MONARCH BUTTERFLIES [Monarque] that we forget to really look closely at the
beautiful bloom. Mac is still waiting for a Monarch Butterfly visit, which
probably is about to happen any moment, if it has not done so undetected
already. It is shaping up to be a great Monarch Butterfly season.
**I’ve had my first
Monarch Butterfly caterpillar [chenille du Monarque] that I’d been rearing for
release go into its chrysalis stage. Looking forward to an adult emerging in
hopefully 10 days, to be released. My success rate is not near as good as I’d
hoped, but rounding the learning curve with a new batch of eggs hatching this
morning.
