** Jane LeBlanc was one of the lucky folks to be on Machias Seal
Island on Friday, to enjoy a visit with the special inhabitants there. She
shares a few photos of ATLANTIC PUFFINS [Macareux moine] in their spectacular
breeding plumage and massive bills, as well as a presumed pair of RAZORBILLS [Petit
Pingouin] showing their heavy, arching bills. Machias Seal Island is an amazing
place to visit and everyone should try to experience it at least once, which
takes a lot of planning, as access Is restricted and the weather has to cooperate
to land on the island.
** Aldo Dorio photographed his first northern-nesting shorebird
species, that appears to be a LESSER YELLOWLEGS [Petit Chevalier]. This may be
an early returning shorebird or a possible non-breeding bird. Aldo also got two
resident WILLETS [Chevalier semipalmé], side by side, one showing the flashy
open-wing markings beside a closed-winged bird. He also photographed the often
confusing female RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD [Carouge à épaulettes].
** Brian Stone is in
Perth, Ontario, and, as expected, his camera is working full-time, getting lots
of species that we can also expect to see here in New Brunswick. Brian got some
excellent shots of the EASTERN COMMA [Polygone virgule] butterfly, with the
upper wing spread to show the heavy border of the fore and hind wings, which
can be confused with the narrower dark band of the SATYR COMMA [Polygone satyre],
and also the dark spot on the inner forewing compared to the two or fused spots
at the same location on the Satyr Comma. The hindwing nicely shows the rusty ground
colour, yellowish spotting and the nice comma mark. He got the very common
EUROPEAN SKIPPER [Hespérie des graminées] and the HOBOMOK SKIPPER [Hespérie
hobomok]. Butterflies included a closed and open vIew of the WHITE ADMIRAL [Admiral]
and an EYED BROWN [Satyre occellé] which can be confused with the NORTHERN
PEARLY EYE [Satyre perlé] at first glance.
Several dragonflies cooperated including the FROSTED WHITE-FACE
[Leucorrhine frigide] male and female, and the spectacular TWELVE-SPOTTED
SKIMMER [La Gracieuse].
Birds photographed included a male COMMON YELLOWTHROAT [Paruline
masquée] warbler, PILEATED WOODPECKER [Grand Pic] and EASTERN PHOEBE [Moucherolle
phébi].
