Jane LeBlanc stood on the St. Martins Beach quietly
and let the birds come close to her hours before high as it rose with the reward
of the sandpipers coming to see her to get some nice photos.
Eddie
and Jane went to Johnsons Mills on Friday and include a photo of the mud flats
there.
** Aldo Dorio got a nice photo of a fresh AMERICAN LADY [Vanesse
de Virginie] butterfly at Hay Island on Saturday. Note the orange-yellow bar on
the forewing and the very squared off forewing tip. With the PAINTED LADY [Belle
dame] butterfly that bar on the wing would be white and the forewing tip would
not be so squared.
Aldo also sends a photo of a SAVANNAH SPARROW [Bruant des prés],
a species which is quite numerous on Hay Island, along with NELSON’S SPARROW [Bruant
de Nelson].
** Louise Richard had a female MONARCH [Monarque] butterfly make
a first visit to her SWAMP MILKWEED [Asclépiade incarnata] patch. Louise found
at least one egg, but probably more are well concealed.
** Brian Stone again re-visited the Gorge Road milkweed patch. He
was able to collect 10 MONARCH butterfly caterpillars in various instars, which
are now in protective custody, hoping that they will proceed to the chrysalis
stage and be released with a better chance of reaching Mexico to overwinter.
