** Bill Winsor encountered somewhat of an oddity on
his morning walk. There was a RED-THROATED LOON
[Plongeon catmarin] fishing in the Petitcodiac river
just downstream from the Iron Bridge in Salisbury. It was Bill’s first sighting in the village
in any season, let alone mid-June. He
was able to take an identification photo with the bright sun not in his
favour. It’s a bit hard to come up with
a reason why a Red-throated Loon in breeding plumage would be in the
Petitcodiac River in mid-June. They
breed well to the north of us.
** Aldo Dorio got another photo of a BLACK
SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY [Papillon du céleri] at Hay
Island. This specimen is quite worn and
may be nearing the end of its flight period.
There is a strong possibility of Short-tailed Swallowtail Butterfly
showing up at Hay Island over the next weeks.
A SAVANNAH
SPARROW [Bruant des prés] also
posed. They find Hay Island good habitat
to breed in. The Nelson’s Sparrow should
be vocalizing there soon as well.
** Brian Stone came upon a RED-EYED VIREO [Viréo aux
yeux rouges] and an Alder Flycatcher seemingly singing to one
another on Friday. Some other life that
Brian photographed was a BLACK SAWFLY [Mouches à scie], a beautiful
open-winged photo of a SILVERY BLUE BUTTERFLY [Bleu argenté], as well as a
nice photo of a FIREFLY that should be sparkling these warm nights. He also got a COMMON RINGLET BUTTERFLY [Satyre
fauve], a CLOUDED SULPHUR BUTTERFLY [Argynne de l’Atlantique], and a few
updated photos of his YELLOW-SPOTTED SALAMANDERS [Salamandre maculée] growing rapidly
in his home aquarium for later release.
Brian’s favourite pond is really becoming low with the present dry
stretch of weather.
** We came across a cow MOOSE [Orignal] enjoying the
habitat created by a beaver pond on Friday.
Note the beaver lodge to the right in one photo. The beaver pond leads to underwater
vegetation that moose enjoy very much.
I’m also
including a photo of an EASTERN PHOEBE [Moucherolle phébi] nest in its
location under the eave of a building, built beside human residences as they so
often do. The photo is zoomed in from a
distance, but shows a few nestlings peaking out. The Eastern Phoebe nest almost always
consists of a mud-moss blend, and they are located under bridges, eaves of
buildings or similar areas.
** I’m finding my small labellum (slipper) specimen
of YELLOW LADY’S SLIPPER (C. parviflorum var. pubescens) [Cypripède jaune] hard to let
go. I had to revisit it on Friday to do
a smell test. It had a sweetish smell,
but not intense as the Small-flowered Yellow Lady’s Slipper (C.
parviflorum var. makasin) is said to
be. I’m also adding one more photo to
show the labellum(slipper) as thumb-size that made me start questioning the
possibilities in the first place.
