**Verica LeBlanc stopped in Pointe-Sapin on Monday and found things
are so much cooler on the coast now.
Verica got a nice photo of a GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL [Goéland
marin] going into its first winter
plumage, note the complete black bill and checkerboard brown plumage. There were also 3 SANDERLING [Bécasseau
sanderling] chasing the water’s edge, as
is there habit. Some Sanderlings will
stay with us late and even into winter if they can find areas where the
shoreline does not freeze.
**Aldo Dorio got a photo of a female EASTERN TOWHEE [Tohi à
flancs roux] in Tabusintac on
Monday. And yes, that sure is fresh snow
with the green blades of grass still showing; hopefully the later is a brief
visitor that will soon disappear. In a
recent Webinar presentation on sparrows and kin, Dorothy Diamond suggested the
Eastern Towhee is a species that we can expect to see more of in the
future. Hay Island seems to be a popular
spot for our winter birds to stop at early.
Aldo saw a few SNOW BUNTING [Bruant des neiges] on Monday and Peter Gadd saw an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW [Bruant
hudsonien] a few days ago at Hay
Island. Aldo on his daily visits to Hay
Island watched a colourful sunrise there on Monday morning. The snow arrived in Tabusintac and Neguac
Monday afternoon.
**Dale Gaskin has been in contact with Sunflower
farmer Mike Dickinson to report that he has had a very good crop this year and
will be ready for a delivery to Nature Moncton soon. Dale has suggested an afternoon drop-off to
a parking area in Moncton, possibly the Coliseum, but is looking for
suggestions for a suitable place and time.
This will tend to make Covid restrictions easier. Dale reports 100 bags are reserved now and if
anyone still wants to reserve more, call Dale at 734-2197 leaving a voice mail
if necessary, with name and number of bags wanted. An announcement will soon be made as to
delivery. Price $17 for a 15 kg bag.
Dale also
comments that he has one lone Evening Grosbeak travelling with Cedar Waxwings
moving between his and a neighbours’ yard.
He also has a 4 1/2-year-old niece who has taken a real joy out of
gathering Meadow mushrooms and Horse mushrooms in the fields on his property.
