** Saturday morning was yet
another morning to get those stunning sunrises.
Krista Doyle got some great photos from Lewis Mountain near Moncton, and
Aldo Dorio got some in the Neguac/Hay Island area. The arrival of winter today may interrupt
that for a bit.
** We are hibernating in our Little
Southwest Miramichi camp. It was a
pleasant morning start to see EVENING GROSBEAKS [Gros-bec errant] lined up with all the other expected regulars, but
the most pleasant surprise was two very healthy-looking RED FOXES [Renard roux] that popped up over the riverbank to peruse the bird feeders. I suspect they
would have liked to have spent more time checking suet offerings if not
interrupted by a nosy photographer. They
both seemed close in size and were urine-marking, so I suspect this may be a
pair thinking ahead to the spring. At this time of year, the potent odour of
male Red Fox urine marking can make Skunk scent gland spray pleasant perfume in
comparison!
** I also noted a pair of BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES
[Mésange à tête noire] going in
and out of a swallow box repeatedly.
They may be thinking winter roost, but maybe they were thinking spring
as well.
** Nature Moncton Members’ Night is
coming up on Tuesday night, January 19th at 7:00 PM. There are several individual presentations
ready to go. Pat Gibbs will give a
presentation on appreciated nature photos; Louise Nichols on orchids she has
encountered in 2019 and 2020 on a small bog she and Glen have on their Aulac
property; Gordon Rattray on the field trip to the White Rock area and Nelson
Poirier on a Turkey Vulture moment, encountering a nest. This will all be virtual. Fred Richards is coaching everyone at the
moment, and a join-in link will be provided soon on the daily BlogSpot for
anyone anywhere to join in.
