** Aldo Dorio sends a photo of an
EASTERN TENT CATERPILLAR in and out of its quite neat tent. This species will
soon be disappearing into their next stage, however the Ugly Nest Caterpillar
is the second tent maker to come on as it is now with a much more erratic nest
that envelopes its host plant, usually small low shrubs or part of the branch
of a larger tree. Am attaching a photo of that caterpillar at its colonial nest
Aldo sent in 2015 that suspect all will
agree, it is appropriately named!
Aldo also got a photo of a domestic HONEY BEE
gathering pollen from an Ox-eye Daisy. These are a wonderful pollinator but
they also collect pollen to make bee bread to feed the colony. This bee’s
efforts show its sac of pollen on the hind leg collectors. This is a female
worker which will only live 14-28 days.
** We don’t expect to see peaches
growing well in New Brunswick but Fred and Lynn Dube have been surprisingly
successful with their peach trees, producing some delicious fruit. They send a
photo of how things are looking as of June 16th, looking like
another good crop. (Editor’s note: Sounds like a good candidate for a stop by
the regular Tuesday night Nature Moncton outings to start next Tuesday evening,
June 21; when they are ripe of course!)
