**Yvette
Richard paid a visit to Highland Park in Salisbury. The BITTERNS [Butor
d'Amérique] eluded her; however, Yvette got some photos of SORA [Marouette de Caroline] and
COMMON GALLINULE [Gallinule d'Amérique] as a consolation prize. Yvette
also found BOBOLINKS [Goglu des prés] quite vocal in the Grande-Digue area by
the lagoon and was able to photograph a male.
**Jane
LeBlanc’s YELLOW LADY’S SLIPPER [Cypripède jaune] plants that she rescued from
Ontario some years ago have taken a liking to her St Martin’s yard. This year,
18 plants are in bloom, twice as many as last year. Jane also photographed the
CINNAMON FERN [Osmonde canelle] in her yard, showing the striking developing
fertile stalks surrounded by the green non-fertile stalks.
**Another
Giant Silkworm reports in. The very beautiful LUNA MOTH [Papillon lune] dropped
by for a visit to the home of Jim Saunders in Miramichi and cooperated nicely
for Jim to get a photo. It appears very fresh. The dramatically long twisted
tails of the Luna Moth give it real character.
**Georges
Brun reports a credible May sighting of a SNOWY OWL [Harfang des neiges]. His
niece informed him that she saw a Snowy Owl on the McLaughlin Road (near the
intersection to Sainte-Marie and Saint-Paul) on May 25th, 2021. The time she
saw it was around 8:30 p.m. She said it was white with a little brown. Georges
had shown her pictures of Snowy Owls over the years, and she quickly identified
the owl. Unfortunately, taking pictures while driving is difficult at any time,
but she did see it fly away into the woods after spotting it. One would wonder
if this owl is late heading back north or if it’s a non-breeder that may linger
through the summer. I have heard of reports of Snowy Owls in summer from Miscou
Island and Tantramar Marsh in the past.
**Lots
of EASTERN KINGBIRDS [Tyran tritri] being reported this year. Aldo Dorio
photographed one at Malpec on Friday, with a nice under-view.
Aldo
also photographed a WILLET, a species that appears to like to set up
housekeeping at Hay Island. Aldo also saw a MALLARD DUCK family enjoying their
day.
**Daryl
Doucette was able to photograph a COMMON EASTERN BUMBLEBEE enjoying gathering
and pollinating his yard Blueberry patch.
**On Friday) Brian Stone was downtown Moncton on an
errand when he noticed the PEREGRINE
FALCON practically just hovering in the sky above the nest box on the Assumption Place building. He, as expected,
had his camera handy and took a few photos. It eventually landed on the
box but would not turn around for him. Brian got some great photos of the
moment.
**Bob
Blake keeps daily weather statistics from his Second North River home,
including morning temperature, daily high temperature, and monthly
precipitation. I am attaching Bob’s table below as he submitted it. A very
noticeable increased amount of precipitation as rain this spring, compared to
last year, as Bob compares May of 2020 stats to May of 2021 stats.
