Happy New Brunswick Day!
** A heads-up for next Tuesday’s Nature
Moncton outing: it will be to some of
the Irishtown Nature Park trails and the write-up is attached below.
Nature
Moncton Walk Write-up for Tuesday, August 3, 2021
This week’s
Tuesday night Nature Moncton outing will be walking through the forest trails
at the Irishtown Nature Park.
Meet at the
Upper parking lot at 6:30. To reach the Upper lot, turn into the main entrance
off of the Irishtown Road and proceed straight forward for 200 meters.
We will look
for mushrooms and plants, birds in the woods and out on the water, and overlook
the entire lake before continuing along the shore and returning back.
The walk is
anticipated to be about 4 kilometers, half of it over tree rooted paths and
perhaps damp/wet terrain.
The leaders
will include Fred Richards, David Cannon and Gordon Rattray.
** Holly Frazer shares a photo of a
family of 4 of 5 MERLINS that she encountered recently. I suspect Holly got the photos in the
Rogersville area but not certain.
** Yolande LeBlanc advises that the NORTHERN
CARDINAL family that fledged young near her Memramcook home area are often
giving a good show between 4:00 to 6:00 PM – the male, female, and
juveniles. And yes, now accompanied by a
LARK SPARROW. Serge Bourque shares some excellent photos of the cardinal
family members.
** Yvette
Richard reports her hummingbirds are super active at the moment with the
youngsters now out and the males trying to boss the whole group. Note the
hummingbird's very long tongue for lapping nectar in one photo.
** John Massey has a DOWNY
WOODPECKER that is enjoying his hummingbird feeder and he got photos of it
enjoying the nectar.
** The suspected PALM WARBLER
fledgling that Aldo Dorio was watching at Hay Island was still there at its
Service Berry bush on Saturday and appearing to be quite happy with its
delicious fruit find and most cooperative for photos.
Aldo’s EASTERN BLUEBIRD family
did not stay in his Neguac yard to nest but obviously did so not far away as
the family returned to his yard when they fledged and he was able to get nice
photos of the youngsters and adults interacting.
