**Jean-Paul
and Stella LeBlanc had an Eastern Bluebird visit their Bouctouche yard
on Friday. It would seem more frequent that we are seeing Eastern Bluebirds
late into the season and occasional ones staying with us over winter. A real
treat!
**Early on
Dec. 10, Friday, Brian Stone got up at 5:00 am, with temperature of -16 and
wind chill of -24, and drove out to a high spot with a decent view to see if he
could improve on his photos of COMET LEONARD (C/2021 A1). Sadly, the
viewing was not great, and the sky was clear of clouds but was very hazy low
down near the ground and so the distant lights of town washed out the comet and
made it difficult to see and photograph. Brian sends his image anyway with some
editing and adjustment to try and bring out the comet's best. Image taken at
5:55 am. His Christmas wish is for better viewing conditions before the comet
dims again so he doesn't have to follow it to the next star system it visits as
it is predicted to leave our solar system after it passes the Sun and not
return.
**Nature Moncton activities committee has had meetings recently to line up events for the coming year. It is looking like a busy one and all events will be appearing on the website under Upcoming Events as writeups are prepared.
The most
immediate one will be the virtual meeting on this coming Tuesday night on
shorebirds with Diana Hamilton and Julie Paquet which will be publicized on the
blog over the next few days.
Another one to
start thinking about immediately his presentations for Members Night on
January 18, 2022. We all have a lot to share in time with the write up below as
it appears on the website:
NATURE MONCTON JANUARY MEETING

VIRTUAL MEETING
MEMBERS’ NIGHT

Once again, we have decided to
hold our annual Members’ Night meeting virtually in order to keep everyone safe
from Covid-19. Have you had an
interesting encounter with nature in the past year? Have you taken some good photos of birds,
insects, animals or anything else in the various habitats of New Brunswick? The
January Nature Moncton meeting belongs to members like you who would like to
share their photos and stories of that world in short 15-minute
presentations.
If you have something you’d
like to share, contact Fred Richards at fredrichards@rogers.com
and he will instruct you how to present on Zoom (very easy!) and do a short
practice run with you if you’d like.
Let’s start 2022 off the right
way – by sharing with one another our positive experiences of the natural world
around us!
For those who want to attend
the meeting, the link to join is below and will be posted on the Nature Moncton
Information Line the days before to remind.
All are welcome, Nature Moncton member or
not.

A Nature
Moncton first field trip of the new year will take place on January 15, 2022.
Mark off your calendars now with the write up below:
Nature Moncton Field Trip
January 15, 2022
White Rock Recreational Area
Leader: Gart Bishop
White Rock
recreational area is a special place a Nature Moncton group enjoyed very much
in spring a few years ago. It is actually a very large area, but we will only
sleuth an area approximately 1 ½ km that has a diversity of tree species and
wildlife.
We may tend
to think things would be quiet in winter, but a lot of surprises can await with
lots of eyes on the lookout to see how Mother Nature’s community very
successfully survives the winter with the magic of botanical antifreeze to keep
some things green.
Every
leafless tree can be identified in winter by those magic bits of anatomy called
buds packed with all the information to burst again in spring.
Depending on the weather conditions, there may
be a layer of snow to find tracks, trails, and scat critters leave behind to
speculate on who’s been there before us.
And who
better to sleuth Mother Nature’s winter world with other than a seasoned guru
like Gart Bishop. This is also one of those outings that no doubt participants
will have lots to share with the group as well.
We will meet
at the northwest corner of the Moncton Coliseum parking lot at 11:00 PM or in
Hillsborough by the sleeping jet plane at Hillsborough Wetland Park at 11:30 AM
and head to nearby White Rock Recreational Area as a group.
